ICLQ
Overall Form, Typology & Style
-
Building Typology: A four-to-five-story institutional or residential complex (commonly seen in Malaysian school blocks, hostel dormitories, or worker accommodations).
-
Architectural Style: Modern Functionalist / Utilitarian Tropical Architecture. The design emphasizes simplicity, repetitive modular planning, cost efficiency, and climate response suitable for Malaysia's tropical environment.
-
Massing & Symmetry: The structure features a long, linear rectangular footprint. Its massing is segmented by full-height vertical recesses/light wells, which break down the visual scale of the block into three major modules.
Facade Composition & Visual Rhythm
-
Vertical Segmentation: Blue-textured/painted central wall panels tie the window bands together vertically across all upper floors, creating distinct vertical stripes that contrast against the stark white rendered walls.
-
Horizontal Datum: A continuous low-pitched canopy roof acts as a horizontal datum line, visually anchoring the grounded base (ground floor) from the repetitive upper residential/classroom levels.
-
Window Fenestration: Standard horizontal multi-pane glazed windows are arranged uniformly across each level, fitted with small overhang fins/ledges above them to deflect rainwater and reduce solar glare.
Ground Floor & Circulation Design
-
Permeability & Covered Concourse: The ground floor utilizes an open-plan, pillared layout (pilotis/columns) creating an airy, sheltered loggia or multipurpose covered space. This area functions as an outdoor communal hall, cafeteria seating, or assembly concourse.
-
Pedestrian Integration: The deep overhang provides continuous shade and rain protection along the pedestrian walkway running parallel to the building face.
Roof Structure & Passive Tropical Features
-
Overhanging Roof: A large, low-pitched hipped or mono-pitched roof features substantial eaves extending outward beyond the building façade.
-
Passive Cooling & Shading: The generous roof overhang protects top-floor walls from direct solar heat gain and tropical downpours.
-
Ventilation Inducement: Deep vertical recesses in the building facade double as cross-ventilation corridors and light wells, drawing daylight and natural breezes deeper into the interior floor plates.
Material & Color Palette
-
Primary Finishes: Plastered and painted concrete brickwork/shear walls in off-white, contrasted with deep blue accent cladding or painted wall panels.
-
Base/Ground Level: Exposed grey plaster or cement finish to withstand heavy foot traffic and splashing water at ground level.
-
Roofing Materials: Metal standing seam or corrugated sheet roofing in dark grey/blue, paired with blue fascia boards along the roofline.
